Davie, United States - January 13, 2018 /PressCable/ —

Dynamic Orthopedic and Memorial Adaptive Sports & Recreation have recently teamed up to to help bring the excitement and joy of wheelchair basketball to kids who are dealing with severe disabilities.

The amazing prosthetics and orthotics treatment of Dynamic Orthopedics has become well known in the South Florida region. This league starts a new path of not only helping treat these children but also to greatly help enrich their lives by participating in active, competitive sports.

The Junior Wheelchair Basketball league’s official name is the Fort Lauderdale Junior Sharks. Their first practice of 2018 was on January 7th. They will be practicing bi-weekly from 4:00pm-6:00pm at Carter Park off of Sunrise Blvd. The age for the kids participating is between ages 5-13.

Playing competitive sports will greatly help these children who are dealing with an enormous difficulty in life to gain confidence. The reaction and feedback from the children thus far has been exceedingly positive and encouraging.

Dynamic Orthopedics’ owner Melisa Chang had this to say, “You can feel the overwhelming amount of positive energy when watching these kids enjoy the sport of basketball. So far we are only beginning practices. This is a work in progress to gain more participation, build numbers of participants and help these kids learn the game. Some have never played before. We are teaching them how to be competitive, how to maneuver the wheelchair and bounce a ball, increasing their endurance, their aim and their strength.”

The children are also very fortunate to have a coach with an intimate understanding of their life situation who has played wheelchair basketball himself. Melisa Chang said, “Coach Luis Amaro is doing a great job working with them. He has an understanding of what it takes to play wheelchair basketball at a competitive level. He himself uses a wheelchair.”

Soto, Hicks HRs give Nats, Yanks unusual doubleheader split

Jun 19, 2018

WASHINGTON — It was a long and odd day, one that started with teenager Juan Soto homering in a game that officially was played before he made his major league debut. Huh? Soto delivered a tiebreaking, pinch-hit, two-run shot in the sixth inning of a game that began and was suspended because of rain last month, five days before he was called up from the minors for the first time, to lift the Washington Nationals to a 5-3 victory over the New York Yankees in the opener of an unusual semi-doubleheader Monday. "Geez, he has a bright future. How old...

Dyson's catch, Goldschmidt's HR lead Arizona past Halos, 7-4

Jun 19, 2018

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Neither Jarrod Dyson nor Justin Upton could tell whether Upton's bases-loaded line drive to the deepest part of center field would have made it out of Angel Stadium. Dyson made sure nobody will ever know with a leaping, lunging catch that might have saved a win for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Paul Goldschmidt hit an early two-run homer and Zack Greinke pitched into the seventh inning of the Diamondbacks' 12th victory in 16 games in June, 7-4 over the struggling Los Angeles Angels on Monday night. Dyson had an early RBI single, and he prevented at least a...

Ozuna misses Altherr's 2-run 2B in 10th, Phils top Cards 6-5

Jun 19, 2018

PHILADELPHIA — Aaron Altherr got his first lucky break in a while. Left fielder Marcell Ozuna dived for and missed Altherr's two-run double with two outs in the 10th inning, allowing the Philadelphia Phillies to rally for a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. Altherr had been hitless in his last 12 at-bats and 1 for 20 before the hit. "The way things have been going, I thought he was going to catch it," Altherr said. "Thankfully he dove for it and it got by." Tommy Pham hit a solo homer in the top of the...

The Fastball Paradox: With velocity up, fastballs on decline

Jun 19, 2018

NEW YORK — Over five seasons as ace of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Gerrit Cole threw one of the game's hardest, heaviest fastballs, and he threw it often. The pitch helped him make millions of dollars. It put him in contention for major awards. Hitters swung through it again and again, and Cole seemed content not to mess with a good thing. But when Cole was traded to the Houston Astros this offseason, a funny thing happened. He became more frugal with his fastball and ended up more overpowering than ever. Cole has joined some of the game's best pitchers —...

Nimmo, Mets finally support deGrom in 12-2 win over Rockies

Jun 19, 2018

DENVER — Brandon Nimmo began the game with an inside-the-park home run. Turned out he was just getting started. Nimmo homered twice during a huge night at the plate, and the New York Mets finally gave Jacob deGrom some run support Monday in a 12-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies. "It took a funny bounce (off the wall), so something was working my way for that first at-bat," Nimmo said. "That was pretty cool and a great way to start it off. Just kind of loosened things up after that." Wilmer Flores and Devin Mesoraco also went deep for New...
