Davie, United States - January 13, 2018 /PressCable/ —

Dynamic Orthopedic and Memorial Adaptive Sports & Recreation have recently teamed up to to help bring the excitement and joy of wheelchair basketball to kids who are dealing with severe disabilities.

The amazing prosthetics and orthotics treatment of Dynamic Orthopedics has become well known in the South Florida region. This league starts a new path of not only helping treat these children but also to greatly help enrich their lives by participating in active, competitive sports.

The Junior Wheelchair Basketball league’s official name is the Fort Lauderdale Junior Sharks. Their first practice of 2018 was on January 7th. They will be practicing bi-weekly from 4:00pm-6:00pm at Carter Park off of Sunrise Blvd. The age for the kids participating is between ages 5-13.

Playing competitive sports will greatly help these children who are dealing with an enormous difficulty in life to gain confidence. The reaction and feedback from the children thus far has been exceedingly positive and encouraging.

Dynamic Orthopedics’ owner Melisa Chang had this to say, “You can feel the overwhelming amount of positive energy when watching these kids enjoy the sport of basketball. So far we are only beginning practices. This is a work in progress to gain more participation, build numbers of participants and help these kids learn the game. Some have never played before. We are teaching them how to be competitive, how to maneuver the wheelchair and bounce a ball, increasing their endurance, their aim and their strength.”

The children are also very fortunate to have a coach with an intimate understanding of their life situation who has played wheelchair basketball himself. Melisa Chang said, “Coach Luis Amaro is doing a great job working with them. He has an understanding of what it takes to play wheelchair basketball at a competitive level. He himself uses a wheelchair.”

McCutchen on the move, other deals percolate at meetings

Dec 12, 2018

LAS VEGAS — Andrew McCutchen moving into Philadelphia's outfield, more talk about a megadeal involving Noah Syndergaard and J.T. Realmuto and veteran pitcher Ivan Nova on the go. The winter meetings picked up a bit Tuesday, but any big deals for the likes of Corey Kluber, Manny Machado and Bryce Harper remained on deck. There were reports the Baltimore Orioles were close to hiring a manager in Chicago Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde. But the O's said those stories were premature and they wouldn't make a decision before leaving Las Vegas. "We don't have a manager," newly hired general manager...

'Little League for esports' hopes to organize youth gaming

Dec 12, 2018

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Christian Pineda plays a lot of video games, but he's best at "Minecraft." Hunched over a laptop in the front row of a half-full movie theater last month, the 13-year-old eagerly showed off why. "I basically know the controls like the back of my hand," he said before turning his focus back to a tight match against a rival team from Boston. Christian claims to be shy at school, but here, he's a vocal leader on a New York team of nearly 20 esports competitors, some as young as 6 years old. With a spot in...

Column: It's time for baseball's shift to go

Dec 12, 2018

LAS VEGAS — Ask baseball managers what they think about the dreaded shift, and most of them have the same answer. It's not a problem if the hitters don't make it one. "There's an easy way to combat that," Oakland's Bob Melvin said. "Just hit the ball the other way." It's a simple enough solution, though certainly an obvious one. Who among us, after all, hasn't screamed at a batter to push the ball the other way or even bunt for a sure hit when the defense is loaded up on one side of the infield? The guys in the...

NEW YORK — Andy Roddick is trying to get his shoulder ready, hoping he can still bring the high heat on serve. The former U.S. Open champion will be back in town and wants to have his game with him. "Coming back to New York is certainly not a place where I want to not play well," Roddick said. He will play fellow tennis Hall of Famer Jim Courier on Feb. 9 in an exhibition match to kick off the New York Open, event organizers announced Wednesday. Wimbledon finalist and defending champion Kevin Anderson and top American John Isner headline...
